1 Jan 1881 In the morning I went to Kilmarnock to attend a concert that was to be held by the Saints of the Galston, Stewarton and Kilmarnock Branches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We had a splendid time of it till about 4 o'clock P.M. when I with a number of the saints started for Glasgow to attend a supper and concert which was to commence at 6 o'clock in the evening. There were about eleven Utah Elders present. President Carrington was with us. We had a very good time till after 11 o'clock P.M. when our party broke up. I stayed all night at the Conference House with Brother Henry Wilson.
2 Jan 1881 Sunday Conference day in the morning we had a meeting for the Presidents of Branches to give in the reports of their Branches. A few of the brethren made a few remarks. I was called upon to say a little which I did. At 11 o'clock A.M. we had a meeting when the reports were given in and the Authorities were presented . At 2 o'clock P.M. we met again when Brother Carrington occupied all the time. Again at 6 o'clock P.M. we had another meeting when Brother Carrington spoke all the time. I got my Uncle George and wife, two daughters and a son and two half cousins to come to meeting. We had a very good Conference and a good attendance. The Saints all seemed to feel well. I stayed all night with my Uncle's family.
3 Jan 1881 Monday In the forenoon I called at the Conference House and had a conversation with Brother Carrington and others of the brethren. Then I went out to see my sister Susan which I found in a very poor condition in consequence of her husband being the worse of liquor. I did not stay long, so I then went to the Conference House again then to Uncle George where I was introduced to several gentlemen, one of them being a minister by the name of Mr. Simson. Brother Dunbar came in after supper when he gave them a good account of the affairs of Utah and talked about the principles of the gospel and altogether we had a good time of it till after 11 o'clock P.M. I stayed all night with Uncle George.
4 Jan 1881 Tuesday Soon after breakfast I went to the Royal Infirmary to see Brother John Cain that was in with a lame back. He was some better. I then went to Conference House and spent some time with Brother Joseph W. Burt who is going home on account of failing health. I then went to Airdrie to see William Ferrier and a Mr. Given, who I invited to attend a meeting tonight to be held in the Mason's Hall in Airdrie, which though declined the invitation, so I went myself. Brother Carrington spoke to the people. We had a good time of it with some of the saints after the meeting was over. We all returned to Glasgow. In the company were Brothers Carrington, McFarlin, Utic, Dunbar and Wilson and McFagan and Scott, Wilson and Dunlop. I stayed all night with Uncle George.
5 Jan 1881 Wednesday At noon I started for Kilsyth to visit some of my old acquaintances by the name of Janet Ferrier or Easton whom I found and was very kind to me. I came back to Glasgow and spent the evening at a party held at my Uncle George's house where I sang a song and spoke a little on the occasion of his birthday. I stayed with them all night.
6 Jan 1881 I went to Hamilton to see my Aunts. Then I returned to Glasgow in the evening. I went with my Uncle's family to the Theater Royal in Glasgow. During the day I had a long chat with Brother Carrington. I stayed all night with my Uncle George.
7 Jan 1881 Friday I went to the station and saw Brother Joseph W. Burt start to go home to Utah on account of failing health. I then started to Cambuslang to call upon one George JanVingle whom I found. I gave him 1/2 sovereign and two pictures that I had received from Sister Floggan in Salt Lake City to give to him and I there learned that his wife had been dead since the first of September, 1880. I then returned to Glasgow and called upon a Sister Blackwood. Then I went to my Uncle's where I spent the evening. I stayed there all night.
8 Jan 1881 Saturday In the forepart of the day I went to the Glasgow Cathedral and spent a short time in it. The windows are all painted with beautiful pictures belonging to scriptural history. At 2 o'clock P.M. I went to the railway station with Brothers Carrington & McAlister to see them off to Dundee where they were going to attend Conference. I left Glasgow with the 3:50 P.M. train for Kilmarnock. I walked out to the Holmes Cottages where I stayed all night with Brother William Graves.
9 Jan 1881 Sunday I went to meeting with the saints in Galston at 12 noon. Then again in the evening at 6:30 I spoke to the Jew that was present. I also spoke a little in the midday meeting . I again stayed all night at the same place.
10 Jan 1881 Monday I received two letters from home and was pleased to hear that all were well when they wrote. Also I received a Deseret News which I read with a great relish. I then went out to visit two families that were a little backward about their duties. I had quite a pleasant chat with them. I spent the night with Brother and Sister Graves.
11 Jan 1881 Tuesday I started from the cottages for a place called the 6 Rows where I attended a meeting with the saints. Brother Miller spoke a little. I also spoke some to the Saints. I stayed all night with Brother and Sister Cunningham at the 6 Rows.
12 Jan 1881 Wednesday Spent the day in and around the 6 Rows. I stayed all night with a family by the name of Calderwood.
13 Jan 1881 Thursday Stayed all day around Sister Calderwood's house. Wrote a long letter to my wife and my son Thomas. Stayed all night with the Calderwood family.
14 Jan 1881 Friday Was around among some of the Saints. In the afternoon wrote a letter to Brother Matthew Thompson in Ayr asking him to hire a hall and advertise a meeting in Ayr on Sunday the 23rd inst. in the evening. I went out to see some of the Saints. I stayed all night with the Calderwood family.
15 Jan 1881 Saturday I called upon some of the Saints. Then I started to go to the Holmes Cottages where I arrived before 6 o'clock P.M. I stayed all night with Brother and Sister Graves.
16 Jan 1881 Sunday In the morning I started for Galston to attend the Saints meeting where I spoke a little. I am still very bad with the cold. Ate dinner with Brother Smith in Galston. In the evening we had no meeting because I was too bad with the cold. Stayed all night with Brother and Sister Wilson at the Holmes Cottages.
17 Jan 1881 Monday At the Holmes Cottages all day on account of being so bad with the cold. I was reading all day. Stayed all night with the Wilson family.
18 Jan 1881 Tuesday I am some better. Went out to visit some of the Saints. I was called to go and see a sick child belonging to Brother William Blackwood. When I arrived, I with Brother George Campbell blessed the little child. It was called Robert White Blackwood. I was mouthpiece. After a little we administered the ordinance to it, I being mouthpiece. The same child died at 3:15 P.M. while I was in the house. I soon went back to Brother Wilson's where I stayed all night. The weather is still very cold.
19 Jan 1881 Wednesday In the morning I read all the revelations of St. John. Then I went to see Brother and Sister Thompson, who are not well. Then I went to Sister Blackwood's to attend to the funeral of their child which had died the day before. I offered up a prayer, then started for the burying ground at 4:15. I returned to their house where we had a talk about things generally. Then I returned to Brother Wilson's where I stayed all night.
20 Jan 1881 Thursday Was around the house of Brother Wilson. Leaving I wrote a letter to Brother Thomson in Ayr in answer to one that I received from him. I then went to Galston where I stayed all night with Brother Smith and family.
21 Jan 1881 Friday Reading all forenoon. Then out visiting among the Saints. Stayed all night in Galston with the Smith family.
22 Jan 1881 Saturday Around among the Saints all day. Stayed all night with Brother Smith in Galston.
23 Jan 1881 Sunday In the morning I attended the meeting of the Saints. There were only six present. I addressed the Saints in the evening. We had another meeting at the Holmes Cottages when I again spoke to the Saints. After the meeting I came back to Galston. The Smith family and I were sitting talking till after 12 o'clock at night when I was called to engage in prayer before retiring to bed. As I was praying there was a power seized hold of Sister Smith and threw her to the floor with great force. So I laid my hands upon her head rebuking the evil spirit. I was taken hold of with the most oppressive power that I had ever encountered in all my life but I prayed to the Lord in the name of Jesus and by virtue of the priesthood for the evil power to be taken away which was done. The same feeling was felt by another young woman that was in the house by the name of Jane Pizer. We all felt the same influence. Stayed all night with the Smith family.
24 Jan 1881 Monday Around Galston all day. Getting some letter. Stayed all night with Brother Wilson.
25 Jan 1881 Tuesday I started in the morning for to go to Stewarton where I arrived about 3 o'clock P.M. I stayed all night with Brother and Sister Brown.
26 Jan 1881 Wednesday In the morning I came to Sister Murphy's where I wrote some letters, one to my wife in Utah and one to my uncle in Glasgow. I stayed all night with a Sister Murphy and her family.
27 Jan 1881 Thursday I received a letter from home and one from a brotherinlaw from Pittsburgh, also one from Brother Dunbar from Glasgow, which I sat down and answered right away. I then started for Warwickhill where I stayed all night with Sister Calderwood. It was thawing very fast.
28 Jan 1881 Friday In the morning it was thawing which was quite a change from what it had been for over three weeks. I was in the house nearly all day reading and writing some in the evening. I was out among some of the Saints. Stayed all night with the Calderwood family.
29 Jan 1881 Saturday In the forenoon I spent among the Saints. Then I started to Kilmarnock for to meet Brother Alexander Burt, who I joined at the station at 3:30 o'clock P.M. Then we took the train out to Galston. We called at Brother Peter Smith's where we stayed a little. Then we went down to Holmes Cottages where we stayed all night with Brother William Graves.
30 Jan 1881 Saturday Had a meeting with the Saints. Brother Burt spoke to the Saints. Afterwards I addressed them for a short time. We spent the evening at Brother Graves's house where we had a good time talking about Utah. We stayed all night with Brother Graves' family.
31 Jan 1881 Monday We went to Kilmarnock on a little business. When we returned we called at Brother Blackwood's on the way. We only stayed a short time. We stayed at Brother Graves all night.
