1 Jan 1882 Sunday Left Motherwell for Glasgow with the 7:35 A.M. train for to attend Conference. Brother Robert Ure and a number of the Saints were along with me. At 11 A.M. our Conference commenced. Brothers Albert Carrington, George Stringfellow, John Stoddard, Robert Irvine, Brothers Boyle, Bastian, Ure, Perry, McMurran, McFarlin also A. N. McFallien and myself, also Brother McKenzie all from Utah. In the forenoon the reports were read and the districts represented by a number of the brethren. Then in the afternoon after the sacrament was administered, then Brother George Stringfellow arose and spoke to the people on the first principles of the gospel. Then Brother Stoddard and myself, then Ure and Boyle and McMurrin all spoke, each a short time, all on topics of our religion. In the evening Brother Albert Carrington spoke all the time, which was at least 1 1/2 hours. In the morning, I opened the Conference by prayer after the singing. I might say that we had a good time of it all day, and also in the evening. After meeting I went to Govan and stayed all night with Brother William Cener, a new member in the Church.
2 Jan 1882 Monday Was in Glasgow all day. In the evening attended a soiree and concert that was held among the Saints. Brother Albert Carrington and all our Utah brethren were present at it. It was a very good turnout and all seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Closed at 12 o'clock at night. Then went to Partick where I stayed along with Brother and Sister Chesnut, who were very kind to me. Brother Baxter was with me.
3 Jan 1882 Tuesday In the morning all of us brethren from Utah except Brother Stringfellow met at Bowman's Art Gallery to get our pictures taken in a group, which was 12 in number. Was in Glasgow all day. In the evening I went to Partick to attend meeting with the Saints. On the way, Brother Baxter and I took supper in the Great Western Company Depo. as we were hungry. He paid for it. We then went on to Partick. Had a meeting. Brother Baxter spoke a little while. Then I spoke to them on the atonement of Christ. Had a good meeting. Three brethren bore testimony to the truth. Stayed all night in the house of Brother Chesnut, Baxter being with me.
4 Jan 1882 Wednesday Left Partick about 1 P.M. for Glasgow. On the way we called at the West End Museum and spent over one hour in it along with Brothers Baxter, Taylor and Banie. Then went on to Glasgow. In the evening I went to my uncle's where I stayed all night.
5 Jan 1882 Thursday Was in Glasgow all day. In the evening Brother Robert Ure and I started for Carnbroe with the 6 P.M. train. When we arrived and had supper, we blessed a bottle of oil and administered to Sister Robertson for spells of sickness that come upon her occasionally. Stayed all night along with Brother and Sister Robertson.
6 Jan 1882 Friday Was in Carnbroe all day. Wrote a letter home to my wife. In the evening, wrote one to Robert Crosbie, Senior. Stayed all night with Brother Robertson. A stormy day.
7 Jan 1882 Saturday Snowing. In the morning about 11:30 A.M. Brother Robert Ure and I started from Carnbroe for to go to Motherwell. Stayed all night in the house of Sister Stevenson.
8 Jan 1882 Sunday At 1 P.M. we had a meeting with the Saints. Administered the Lord's supper. Brother Ure spoke a little, then I spoke also about the thief on the cross with Jesus. After meeting, went to Mrs. Guys for dinner. While there, had a long talk with two men about polygamy. After tea, Brother Ure and I went to Hamilton to see Brother Andrew Robertson. He was not very well. We returned to Motherwell and stayed all night in the house of Sister Stevenson.
9 Jan 1882 Monday Went to Lanark. Stayed all night in the house of Emily Campbell. Brother Robert Ure was with me.
10 Jan 1882 Tuesday In Lanark all day. Stayed in the same house. In the evening went to Kirkfieldbank to see the Anderson family.
11 Jan 1882 Wednesday Left Lanark and went to Hillend to visit the family of Brother James Crosbie. I gave him a receipt for 4 pounds that I had received from him for emigration, which had been sent to Liverpool. Stayed all night with him.
12 Jan 1882 Thursday I left Hillend for to go to DunlopPlace to visit Sister Annie Houston. Before I left, I called upon a Thomas Hair, that had the loan of a Book of Mormon. He told me there was nothing to be learned by reading it, so I brought it away from him. He was a cousin of my father's. I then called upon Robert Crosbie, Sr. and spent a short time with him and his wife. Then went on to Sister Houston's. In the evening I had a long conversation with Robert McCan, a preacher of the place. Stayed all night with the Houston family.
13 Jan 1882 Friday Left Dunlop-Place and went to Waterloo to visit a cousin of mine, where I stayed all night.
14 Jan 1882 Saturday Left Waterloo for Motherwell. After arriving, I received a letter from my wife and son, Thomas, dated 25 and 26 December 1881. Answered it by writing to them after 10 o'clock P.M. Sat up till after 1 o'clock A.M. writing to them. Sent them a long letter. I stayed all night in the house of Sister Mary Stevenson. Received also a letter from Brother R. R. Irvine and a receipt in favor of Andrew Wallace, which I returned to him because I knew nothing about it.
15 Jan 1882 Sunday Was in Motherwell all day. At 1 o'clock P.M. attended a meeting with the Saints. After partaking of the Lord's Supper, I spoke to them on the importance of doing it in a proper and acceptable manner before the Lord. In the evening, Brother Andie Robertson put 1/ shilling into my hand as I was walking along with him on the road. Spent a pleasant time talking to a number of the Saints around the fireside. Stayed all night in the house of Sister Stevenson.
16 Jan 1882 Monday Left Motherwell to go to Blantyre to visit Brother William Robertson where I spent a very pleasant evening, athough I had no meeting. Stayed all night with him and family.
17 Jan 1882 Tuesday Stayed all day in Brother Robertson's. Wrote two letters, one to Brothers Robert Love and Jessie Sloan about trying to get up meetings for me when I go to their place, which will be next Sunday, if all is well. Also wrote one to my daugher and son-in-law, Chris Anderson. Then in the evening I had a long talk with a family called Robertson. Stayed all night in Brother William Robertson's.
18 Jan 1882 Wednesday Left Blantyre for Carnbroe where I arrived about 5 P.M. (but before I left Brother Robertson gave me 2 pounds of borrowed money). I had a long chat with a man in the house of Richard Robertson on the doctrines taught by the Latter-day Saints. Stayed all night in the house of Brother John Hendrie in Carnbroe.
19 Jan 1882 Thursday A beautiful morning and feeling well. Went to Airdrie to see Mr. Ramus, but did not see him, so I came back to Carnbroe. In the evening went to Calderbank (along with Brother John Hendry) to visit a man by the name of Richard Neal, who was once in the Church. We spent a pleasant time with him and his brother, William. They offered me a house to hold a meeting in, which I told them I would take with the greatest of pleasure. So I was to let them know by letter when I would come and they would warn the people to meeting. Returned to Carnbroe and stayed all night with the Hendry family.
20 Jan 1882 Friday Still in Carnbroe. I wrote a letter to Brother George Jamison, who is in Utah at Park City. In the evening I spent the time with a man called Garner, who had once been in the Church about 20 years ago. Stayed all night with the Hendrie family.
21 Jan 1882 Saturday I left Carnbroe for to go to Longridge. I arrived there about 6 o'clock P.M. Found the Saints all well. Stayed all night with Isaac Stone.
22 Jan 1882 Sunday Was in Longridge all day. Held two meetings with the Saints. In the afternoon had a meeting with the Saints and some strangers. After the sacrament was administered, I was asked to speak, which I did, on the mission of Joseph Smith. Had a good meeting. Then again in the evening we had another meeting in the house of a Mr. Sneddon. I preached for one hour on the subject of the Church of Christ being built on revelation. Had a good meeting, though not as large as the one that I had the last time that I had been there. The meeting that we held during the day was held in the house of William Hill. Stayed all night along with Brother Isaac Sloan.
23 Jan 1882 Monday Was in Longridge all day. In the evening Brothers Love and Loan and myself went to a Mrs. Shanks to see if we could get a house to hold a meeting in. We did not get one, so we concluded to hold meeting in the house of William Hill tomorrow evening. I received from Sister Potter a pair of socks and a cravat for to keep me in remembrance of her kindness and good wishes for me. A Sister Duncan gave me a 6 pence, poor woman. I hope that the Lord will bless and prosper them both for their kind feelings toward me. I stayed all night in the house of Brother and Sister Sloan. I wrote a note to Brother Irvine.
24 Jan 1882 Tuesday Was in Longridge all day. Not feeling well on account of headache. In the evening I went through the rows of Longridge and distributed tracts and warned the people to a meeting tonight in the house of William Hills. When the time came, I preached to the people that came on the subject of Christ going to preach to the spirits in prison. Had a good meeting. Stayed all night along with Brother Sloan. Was very kindly received by the few Saints, also by Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Love (the time I have been here) though not in the Church.
25 Jan 1882 Wednesday I left Longridge for to go to Falkirk. On the way I called on the family of Duncan Lamont in Blackbraes. Found them all well although feeling bad on account of his condition, which is very low. When I came to Falkirk, there was a letter from my son, Daniel, and two papers. Spent the evening with Brothers McLeary and Pender, reading a speech of President John Taylor and talking about things in general about Utah. Stayed all night.
26 Jan 1882 Thursday In Falkirk all day reading. In the evening I went out with Sister McLeary for to try and find out any by the name of Bow. We found one John Bow, who was very kind to me. I told him I wanted to find out about the Bow family, as my wife was a Bow and her father belonged to Falkirk. He could give me no information about my wife's family. When I returned to Sister McLeary's, I received a letter from my son, William, telling me he was going to get married on Thursday the 12 inst. to Clara Boam, stating that all was well at home. Stayed all night in the house of Brother John McLeary.
27 Jan 1882 Friday Was in Falkirk all day. I wrote a letter to my son, William, also one to my son, Daniel, and one to my daugher, Janet. In the evening Mrs. John Bow called upon me to inform me that her husband was sick and that he would not be able to go out with me to see another Bow that he said he would take me to. She asked me to come to her house tomorrow, which I promised to do. I stayed all night with the McLeary family.
28 Jan 1882 Saturday About 12 o'clock noon I went through a large foundry in Falkirk. In the evening I called again on Mr. John Bow. Had a long pleasant talk about America and also about the religion of the Latter-day Saints. Stayed all night again with the McLeary family.
29 Jan 1882 Sunday Had meeting with the few Saints in Falkirk after the sacrament was administered. Brother Pender, Sister Pender and Sister McLeary bore testimony. Then I spoke to them for about one hour on the duties of Saints. After meeting I went to Blackbraes to see the Lamont family, but Mrs. Lamont and her son had gone to Edinburgh to see Brother Lamont, her husband and his father, who had grown worse. Returned to Falkirk. Had a long conversation with a man called Meacham and with two of his brethren, Mr. Neal and Mr. Handie, all about the religions of the day and sayings in the scriptures. Promised to call and see him the next time I come to Falkirk. Stayed all night in the house of Brother McLeary.
30 Jan 1882 Monday Left Falkirk for to go to Longridge. Before leaving, I received a letter from R. R. Irvine and a Deseret News. I also sent to Brother John Stoddard 1 pound 10 shillings in a registered letter Number 147 to Edinburgh. Then went on to Longridge where I arrived after dark very tired. I went in at Slamanan and got a glass of gin which revived me some. I stayed all night in the house of Brother Isaac Sloan.
31 Jan 1882 Tuesday Was in Longridge all day. In the evening Brother Robert Love and I went around a place called the Lodge and invited the people to a meeting to be held in a William Sneddon's. Wrote a letter to Brother R. R. Irvine. We had a good meeting. While I was speaking, a drunk man came in called Stephen Hunter. I asked him to be quiet, which he was, and I continued to speak on on the mission of Christ as laid down in the 5th chapter of Hebrews. Spoke freely and felt well. Gave away quite a number of tracts. William Hill and Adam Stewart said they would get baptized the next time I came back to Longridge. Stayed all night in the house of Brother Sloan.
