Samuel South Dies of Illness

Samuel Rich South died in a local hospital Wednesday morning early following a month's illness. Mr. South was born September 11, 1871 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Taylor Rich South. He was married to Hannah Corless November 10, 1899 in the Salt Lake City LDS temple. This month they had been married fifty years.


Mr. South lived in Randolph, Utah until 1923 when he came to Idaho Falls. At Randolph he taught for 13 years in the schools and had spent two and a half years starting in 1896 in the southern states on an LDS
mission.

 

A graduate of the Utah State Agricultural college in Logan, he has been recognized in the area for his violin talents. Since he came to Idaho Falls he operated a sawmill in the Island Park area until two years ago when his son, Charles South, took over its management. The latter was killed July 21, 1948, in a sawmill accident.

Samuel Rich South is survived by his widow and the following children:

Lorenzo South, Evanston, Wy;

Mrs. Elgie Larson, Randolph;

Mrs. Zelma Schwartz, Boston, Massachusetts;

Mrs. Dorothy Hackworth, St. Anthony;
Mr. B.E. (Barney) South, Idaho Falls.

 

Nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Hatch, Ogden, Utah,
also survive.  Funeral services will be announced later by the Wood Funeral home.

Funeral services for Samuel Rich South, who died Wednesday, were held Friday afternoon at the LDS Fourth ward chapel with G.L. Crapo of the Fourth ward bishopric officiating.  The music included: prelude and postlude organ music, Mrs. J. E. Mellor; male quartet selection, "Abide With Me" and "The Teacher's Work is
Done," F.E. Belnap, Joe Parker, Walter Clark, Lavon Stokes; organ solo, medley of hymns, President Oscar W. Johnson; violin solo, "The Perfect Day," Mrs. Tabb George, accompanied by Mrs. Mellor.

 

Invocation was by Walter Clark; the benediction by Vern L. Brown; obituary by G.L. Crapo; speakers, Bishop Warren A. Wright, President J.W. Telford, President H. Ray hatch. Pallbearers were Edward South, Dan South, Burton South, Warren Bybee,
Gene Jones, W.R. Skinner.

The Fourth ward Relief Society was in charge of floral arrangements and were carried by mesdames John Hart, Vernon Johnson, G.E. Mack, H.E. Hackworth, C.L. Ferney, Anabella Snarr, Edith Southwick, Emma Lloyd,  J.Lee Hornick.

The body was taken by the Wood funeral home to Randolph, Utah for additional services Saturday at the Randolph LDS chapel.
